FA Cup third-round draw: Liverpool hosts Merseyside neighbours as Manchester United meets Derby county

Among a handful of local derbies thrown up in the exciting Monday night FA Cup third-round draw, a draw producing a Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton was the pick of thw night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will play against Everton in their next Premier League game on Sunday for the first time this season and will now meet again over the weekend of January 5-8 for the FA cup clash.

It will be the first time the two sides will be facing each other in the FA Cup derby since Liverpool prevailed 2-1 in a 2012 FA Cup semi-final clash, the Reds later going on to lose to Chelsea in the final by the same score line.

In other draw results, Premier League leaders Manchester City will host Burnley at The Ethiad stadium, while Manchester United host Derby and Chelsea will travel away to Norwich.

Seventh-tier Hereford the phoenix club formed in 2014 following the demise of old FA Cup giant killers Hereford United obviously the lowest-ranked side left, will face Leicester provided they overcome Fleetwood Town at home for the second attempt.

Three non-league sides remain and all are involved in replays but there remains a chance that this will be the first third round without a non-League team since 1925 if non of the sides prevail ahead of their replays

Woking, who also plays in the fifth tier, will face Peterborough for a replay and a victory will earn them a trip to Championship side Aston Villa. National League side AFC Fylde will head to Premier League Bournemouth but firstly will have to get past Wigan in a replay.

In other ties, AFC Wimbledon will travel to Wembley to take on Tottenham, Brighton & Hove Albion will host Crystal Palace – the latter one of three all-Premier League contests, and Middlesbrough face Sunderland and

The Merseyside derby gives Liverpool the chance to correct one of cup football’s more unusual statistics – that the Reds have never beaten Everton in an FA Cup tie at Anfield.

In fact, the last time the Toffees lost at that ground in either the FA Cup or League Cup was in 1892, when Anfield was their home stadium and they were beaten by Burnley.

Ties will take place on the weekend of 6-7 January 2018.
