Top seed and 15-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal was on the receiving end of a stunning upset in the last 16 by 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Wildcard Shapovalov came from a set down to beat top seed Nadal 3-6 6-4 7-6 (6-4) and become the youngest player to reach a Masters 1000 quarter-final and also the second youngest player to defeat Nadal after Croatia’s Borna Coric at the 2014 Swiss Indoors
Roger Federer also progressed to the last eight after recovering from an uncharacteristic out-of-sorts first set to defeat David Ferrer in the third round of the Rogers Cup.
The evergreen Swiss and second seed was in majestic form in the previous round against Peter Polansky, a match that lasted less than an hour, on his first outing since winning a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title.
However, it was a decidedly more difficult task in the next round against fellow veteran Ferrer, who ultimately came up short in a 4-6 6-4 6-2 defeat on Thursday.
Ferrer lost his nerve when serving out at 5-3, but Federer failed to make the most of the reprieve and handed the break straight back to surrender the first set.
That snapped a remarkable run of 32 consecutive sets won by Federer, who had seemingly found another gear by breaking Ferrer at the first time of asking in the second.
Ferrer hit back, but this time he failed to build on the momentum as second-seed Federer regained the break lead that he would not relinquish.
The Swiss world number three, 36, came from a set behind to beat the Spaniard 4-6 6-4 6-2 and next faces another spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (6-2) while the
World number 143 Shapovalov, the 2016 Wimbledon junior champion, plays 29-year-old Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
In the other quarter-finals, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who beat Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-4 6-3, will play South African Kevin Anderson, who saw off American Sam Querrey 6-4 6-1 in the last 16.
And Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands. Haase beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (6-3) 4-6 6-1, while Schwartzman defeated American Jared Donaldson 0-6 7-5 7-5.
