Kevin Stewart Jr. is about to release his first EP named “Yes”, much to the excitement of his already sizeable army of fans. With the album expected to be a success and fame imminent, the exciting,newfangled sound that he has made his own is certain to gain interest from across the world.
The development of his unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family meant that Kevin was always surrounded by different forms of music. His father and mother are gospel singers with various groups, and his parents exposed him to a wealth of music as a child, all of which influenced his development.
His first foray into singing was at the age of three Kevin already knew what he wanted to do in life and that was to sing. It was here in Detroit where he developed his musical tastes and interests. At the age of seven Kevin was singing and directing in the children’s choir at Liberty Temple Baptist Church in Detroit. Later from there Kevin continued singing, he joined the children’s choir for the National Baptist Convention USA, and the Faith choir where he was featured singing ‘My soul loves Jesus’. Kevin sang to over 20,000 people. The next accomplishment was when Kevin auditioned for the Lion King on Broadway which he won in Detroit, from there, he was sent to Chicago to audition again to compete in the finals and he was the runner up. He began doing radio commercials and singing in various churches and musicals. All of which have had a profound influence on the direction his musical journey has taken.
He later auditioned for the Production of the ‘Raisin in the Sun’. He received the part of the little boy Travis, he performed for three months. The same production company called him back to play a part in another play call ‘Getting up out of Here’ in which he stared in. That performance lasted several months also. He also auditioned for the Mosaic Theater in Detroit and received and full scholarship to attend the summer program, to study music, dance and theater. He was one of the featured soloist and dancer.
Kevin’s musical journey began in July of where he ministered a song on the Bobby Jones show in Washington D.C. at the age of 10 years old.
After realizing that making music was his main goal, he began to showcase his talent in various venues across Michigan, singing at numerous churches and making sure that his name and music were being heard by as many people as possible. He was quickly noted for the unique style that he brought to the traditional and contemporary gospel scene, and his popularity began to grow. Kevin as also opened up the show in which Sister Vicki Winans was the special guest. He is also on his father c.d. Kevin Stewart ‘One More Day’. He has sung with Kierra Sheard (KiKi) and many others. He has toured with the MGA Community choir to New York and Ontario where he was the featured soloist. He auditioned for two plays ‘If these hips could talk’ and ‘Why do good girls like bad boys’ and received a part in the play.
In May, 2010 Kevin sang for the Ford Freedom Award ceremony, where he dedicated a song to the R&B artist Usher.
As his confidence grew and his style developed, he soon saw a loyal following begin to grow and he became a popular local hit in the Detroit music scene. His talent with a variety of gospel music added to his appeal, and his unique gospel sound with a twist started to find an appreciative audience.
Finally, after honing his unique sound over recent years, he is now preparing to release his debut single, ‘Yes’, which underlies the changes that Kevin has gone through over recent years. Which has allowed him to develop as a person, and has in turn profoundly aided his musical development.
