Fifteen-year-old Marta Kostyuk’s push at the Australian Open came to an end after losing 6-2, 6-2 against Ukrainian fourth seed Elina Svitolina in just 59 minutes.
Kostyuk’s success, coming through qualifying and reaching the third round, has been one of the major talking point of the tournament but she found Svitolina too experienced and proficient for her ability in her debut on Rod Laver Arena.
The young world number 521 was given a wild card into qualifying after winning the junior title 12 months ago and must now look to perfecting her way up the WTA ranking in her subsequent games to come.
Marta Kostyuk was aiming to be the youngest since 1996 to progress to the last 16, and after the lose, she was asked howmuch she has learned, the teenager said: “A lot. How much do you have to pay Svitolina to have a one-hour lesson? I got it for free.
she went further and said “She’s (Svitolina) a great player, but what I learned is that you can play against everyone. I had the chances, but because I thought she is incredible, like she’s a god, I cannot do anything against her, that’s the problem.”
Svitolina said: “It was sad that I was playing a Ukrainian girl. She’s a great fighter, she fought right until the end and has a great future. We are going to hear a lot more about her”The 23-year-old world No 4 is the only seed left in her quarter of the draw and will be facing world number 130 Czech qualifier, Denisa Allertova in her next game.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s category, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov came through a tough game against 30th seed Andrey Rublev to progress to the fourth round of the Australian Open
The world number 3 and 2017 finalist won 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4 in high temperatures on Rod Laver Arena after making a number of some poor erros which Rublev took advantage of but couldn’t get a next stage reward at the end of the day.
The 26-year-old will play either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Nick Kygrios in the last 16 of the tournament.
Elsewhere in Men’s category, Spanish 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta beat Gilles Muller 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-5 7-5 to progress to the next round.
