Tennis: Grigor Dimitrov wins Kyrgios to claim first ATP 1000 title as Muguruza thrashed Halep

• The 26- year-old world number 11, claimed his third title of the season
• Neither man had previously reached a master final at this level
• Garbine Muguruza beat Simona Halep at the Cincinnati open final
• Had Halep won, she would have replaced Karolina Pliskova at the top of the world rankings

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov got the better of Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in straight sets to win his first ever ATP 1000 title in the Cincinnati Open final on sunday.

The 26 years old world number 11 broke once in each set to beat the world number 23, 6-3 7-5 and claim his third title of the season after earlier victories in Brisbane and Sofia

Neither man had previously reached a final at this level, and it was the Bulgarian who proved he had the composure to come out on top with a success in Cincinnati.
Kyrgios was the youngest to have gotten to a Cincinnati final since Novak Djokovic in 2009. He proved a tip of what he can achieve by harnessing his dexterous talent in defeating top seed Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, but the Australian lost the important moments against the preeminent Dimitrov.
A single break in each set was enough for Dimitrov to prevail as he celebrated the biggest victory of his career while it remains to be seen how Kyrgios will react to the loss after the promise shown in such a mature performance against Nadal.

Futhermore, in the women’s final, Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza won Romanian Simona Halep 6-1 6-0 to claim the Western and Southern Open and deny her opponent the number one spot at the WTA rankings.

This would be Muguyuza’s first title in the US and her second of the year. In the last three tournaments, the spaniard has managed to reach at least the quarterfinals. She’s now on to the next tournament in New York for the the US open, which set to begin in a couple of days and where she’s got a history of disappointment.
Had Halep won, she would have replaced Karolina Pliskova at the top of the world rankings – but the 25-year-old was beaten in just 57 minutes.
After beating Britain’s Johanna Konta in the semi final, Halep hit 20 unforced errors and struggled to find any rhythm.

Czech Pliskova, a semi-final loser to Muguruza, will remain world number one by a five-point margin over Halep as Muguruza moves up to third.

Halep has been quick to apologize to her fans after missing out yet again on the third opportunity she’s got to ascend to the top of the ATP ranking as she wrote on twitter

“I want to apologies [sic] to the fans for the last match, I’m really disappointed but it is made by me so I take it BUT congrats to Garbine for the great tennis.
“I will keep myself working to get stronger on each side of myself.
“Thanks to my [team] that is by my side also in these moments, sometimes, like today, I can’t respond even to [coach] Darren’s [Cahill] advices.
“Looking forward to US Open now! See you soon.”
